The N70 is an important link for the accessibility of Sint-Niklaas and at the same time it is one of the most dangerous roads in Flanders. The road was being renovated at several points to ensure a smoother traffic flow and improved safety for all road users.
A number of measures were taken to improve the traffic flow. Two lanes were built in each direction between the Singel and the roundabout on Parklaan and an extra lane on the roundabout.
The roadworks also provided an opportunity to renew the highly outdated sewerage system under the N70. A new separate sewerage system ensures that rainwater and waste water are discharged separately and that waste water can be better treated.
Two filter lanes in the direction of the roundabout should reduce the number of drivers going through the red lights. A new wide and elevated one-way cycle path along the N70 is another of the changes that will increase safety.
Driveways to surrounding houses and businesses were provided with temporary gravel and auxiliary bridges to keep them accessible not only for pedestrians and cyclists, but also for car traffic.
The companies in the area were not very happy at the start of the project. An action committee expressed their concern. However, positive and constructive co-operation was soon possible through clear communication with and to this group.
